Worth the wait: Yellowstone’s Giantess Geyser erupts for first time in six years

Image
Giantess is one of the biggest geysers in the national park, and typically explodes between twice and six times a year In these troubled times there comes a point where we all need to let off steam. For this huge geyser in Yellowstone park, the moment was now and the eruption was spectacular, after a six-year wait. But, for the rest of us, watching this natural phenomenon is strangely meditative and beautifully distracting from much of the bad news around, despite the violent geothermal forces propelling it.Giantess Geyser spouted for the first time in more than six years in Yellowstone National Park, which straddles part of Wyoming and a little of Montana, on 25 August, according to the US National Park Service (NPS).“She” has more typically erupted between twice and six times a year in the past, according to the NPS website, and blasts a spout up to 200ft high.“The surrounding area may shake from underground steam explosions just before the initial water and/or steam eruptions,” the NP...

Nifty, Sensex end lower after China border tensions; banks weigh

Indian shares closed lower on Monday, snapping a streak of six straight sessions of gains, as a fresh border flare-up between India and China outweighed initial optimism from further opening of the economy. The NSE Nifty 50 index closed down 2.23% at 11,387.50, while the S&P BSE Sensex ended 2.13% lower at 38,628.29. My husband died of colon cancer. He and Chadwick Boseman aren’t alone.

Image
Alanna Jackson says her husband, Willie, like Boseman, privately waged a war against the disease after being diagnosed under 40. Chadwick Boseman’s passing from colorectal cancer (CRC) was shocking to many, but a video he posted in April 2020 promoting an initiative to help hospitals serving predominantly Black communities was the only tip-off I needed to know he was in a war for his life. The passing of Chadwick Boseman from this same disease at a similarly early age felt more personal than any other celebrity loss. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/3jqvPz4 via IFTTT

Ask HN: Captcha Alternatives? 49 by ev1 | 42 comments on Hacker News. TLDR: I help with a gaming community-related site that is being targetted by a script kiddie, they are registering hundreds of thousands of accounts on our forums to 'protest' a cheating (aimbot) ban. They then post large ASCII art spam, giant shock images (the first one started after we blocked new accounts from posting [img]), the usual. Currently we use a simple question/answer addon at registration time - it works against all untargeted bots and is just a little "what is 4 plus six" or "what is the abbreviation for this website" type of question. It's worked fine for years and we don't really get general untargeted spam. I am somewhat ethically disinclined to use reCAPTCHA, and there are some older members that can't reasonably solve hcaptcha easily. Same for using heavy fingerprinting or other privacy invading methods. It's also donation-run, so enterprise services ...

Yegor Zhukov, who came to prominence last year when he was arrested and tried over opposition protests, posted pictures of his bruised and bloody face to social media following the attack. He was taken to hospital for an MRI scan which showed he had “fortunately managed to avoid serious injuries or internal bleeding,” a spokesman said. FDA commissioner says he's open to issuing COVID-19 vaccine before human trials are over

Image
In an interview with the Financial Times published Sunday, FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn said that he is willing to issue an emergency use authorization for a COVID-19 vaccine prior to the conclusion of human trials.Hahn said this could be done because "the benefit outweighs the risk in a public health emergency," and claimed he would not give in to President Trump or other politicians who have asserted that there will be a vaccine available before the end of the year. "This is going to be a science, medicine, data decision," Hahn told the Financial Times. "This is not going to be a political decision."Public health experts quickly pushed back on the idea of fast-tracking a vaccine out of the normal testing guidelines. Dr. Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at Columbia University, tweeted that it would be unethical to administer the vaccine before it is proven safe and effective. Key air monitors offline after Laura hits Louisiana gas hub

Trump's RNC polling bounce more about 'subtraction on the Biden side,' pollster suggests

Image
President Trump's post-Republican National Convention polling bounce was particularly evident among white and suburban voters, a new Morning Consult poll shows.Overall, the RNC helped Trump shrink Biden's previously 10-point lead to a six-point advantage, 50 percent to 44 percent. Among suburbanites, Biden led by 14 points after the Democratic National Convention (54 percent to 40 percent), but after the RNC finished, that had dwindled to a 50-42 margin. Trump also increased his lead from two points to eight points among white voters, though his already-dismal prospects among voters of color got slightly worse. While the results are good news for the Trump campaign, they aren't necessarily that drastic in a larger context. That's because the two conventions are seemingly tied to one another — Biden received a boost in favorability ratings after the DNC, but the numbers went back down to their pre-convention standing after the RNC, which means it was mostly a wash, Mornin...

Jacob Blake's attorney says family has received no word from Trump

Image
Ben Crump, an attorney for Jacob Blake, said during an appearance on Sunday's Face the Nation that Blake's family has not yet heard from President Trump, a week after Blake was shot by a police officer in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Trump, who did speak with George Floyd's family after he was killed by police earlier this year, is scheduled to visit Kenosha next week as protests grip the city. While there, he plans to meet with law enforcement. It appears as if the president is making it clear which side he stands on regarding the protests sparked by the shooting, but it's at least possible the White House will reach out to Blake's family then. Crump suggested Blake's family would be open to a conversation since they respect "all elected officials." Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), have already spent time talking with the family.> .@AttorneyCrump says Jac...

SNP ministers demand Boris Johnson drop 'UK' and 'Britain' from nationwide cultural festival

Image
SNP ministers have demanded that Boris Johnson drop the words 'Britain' or 'UK' from the branding of a nationwide cultural festival being planned for 2022. Whitehall insiders said the Scottish Government had also objected to 'British' being included in title or promotional material for the celebration of the "very best of modern Britain." The row is said to have delayed the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) commissioning around £3 million of work from creative agencies tasked with drawing up the material. UK Government sources said the SNP's stance was "incredibly petty and hugely frustrating", with the festival expected to give Scotland's struggling cultural sector a £12 million boost. Talks with the Scottish Government are now said to have stalled over planning for the event, which was envisaged as a successor to the hugely popular 1951 Festival of Britain. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt...

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may have a lot to do with Joe Kennedy's primary struggles

Ed Markey (D-Mass.) in the statewide Democratic primary for Markey's seat, which he's held since 2013. Politico notes that Kennedy tries to hit the 74-year-old Markey by criticizing his support for the 1994 crime bill and the Iraq War when he was in the House, both of which would seemingly put him in trouble with the progressive left. But the incumbent has maintained a lead over his 39-year-old challenger in large part thanks to an army of young voters, who, with a push from Rep.
